Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Portugal, is pioneering the integration of AI into sustainable tourism through the COIMBRA Sustainable Tourism LLM project. This initiative aims to improve tourist experiences while promoting environmental and cultural sustainability.
Tourism as a use case for AI
The project introduces a web portal powered by Large Language Models (LLMs), offering personalized itineraries and real-time information on over 300 tourist attractions. This AI-driven platform assists visitors in planning their trips, encouraging longer stays and deeper engagement with the city’s offerings.
The project also focuses on upskilling over 2,000 individuals, including unemployed persons and migrants, in green and digital competencies relevant to the tourism sector.
The project is a collaborative endeavour involving the Municipality of Coimbra, the Intermunicipal Community of the Coimbra Region, Turismo de Portugal, the University of Coimbra, the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, Instituto Pedro Nunes, Present Technologies, and INOVA+. It has secured €5 million in funding from the European Urban Initiative. Read more here.
